ABOUT US

Polished Ponies Australia (PPA) is the brainchild of mine (Shane). I grew up in South Australia and later moved to Western Australia as a teenager where I went to boarding school at Harvey Agricultural College and started competing in dressage and got my first horse at 14; a Palamino called Freedom that I had with me while at boarding school. I competed in dressage and hacking up until I was 28. I also did my hairdressing apprenticeship in Kalgoorlie WA.

Towards the end of my 20s, I started breeding Welsh A's and Arabs with my first Welsh stallion Llanfairbryn Snowdon and Arabian Stallion Hillsley Park Ethan by Wellworth Djebel. I also leased and campaigned in hand and under saddle with Amberglade Ali Shaklan by Amir El Shaklan who was owned by Elly Barton.

I worked as a hairdresser throughout my life and then a few years ago a friend asked me about removing stains on her Palomino horse. As a result, I started playing around with different concoctions, trialling various brands of purple and blue shampoos to see what worked the best and what ingredients were in those products, this produced my initial product the ‘Purple Soap’. This product quickly became quite popular and other friends were asking me to make it, however, to make the soap, I had to make a shampoo first. Already having the shampoo base there and my friend’s 18 hands horse needing more than one bar of soap, I gave her some of the shampoo to use which worked amazingly and she asked for more, so then came the shampoo in addition to the soap. At this point it was just a shampoo and the soap, however, I had really spent a lot of time researching what was in shampoos and obviously I already had a good understanding of this from all my years in hairdressing, but the pH level required for horses and other animals is different to that required for humans, so it was all a learning curve. Polished Ponies Australia now have a variety of products.

As I started creating the products, I was donating a lot of products to different shows and events to try and help make sure they looked ‘a little bit more appealing’ as entry numbers were dropping off and as people tried the products, more people became interested in them as they actually worked. I genuinely started this venture as a hobby and to a point, I still look at it as a hobby because it's important for me to enjoy and still feel passionate about doing this and when anything feels as if it becomes too much, I really feels that ‘you need to reevaluate what the purpose is’. I have always given away products and supported people where I can because I am a firm believer in karma and wholeheartedly believe that what you put out is what you will get back.
